Weekly seminars of a cognitive nature organized by the Department of Biblical Studies continue. Today, on December 2, Zurab Jincharadze, a fourth-year student of the Seminary, read a report on the topic: Relation between a Private Opinion and the General Teaching of the Church (the supervisor: Rezo Mujirishvili, a New Testament teacher).
The speaker’s approach to the issue was that when considering questions concerning the Church, attention should be paid to ecclesiastical consensus (consensus patrum). One or more ecclesiastical authors may express a certain opinion on a particular issue; however, it may not be shared by the Church as the unfailing and infallible doctrine of the Church. To clarify this conception, the speaker presented several examples as well. At the same time, he emphasized that private opinions should not be understood as heresy.
The seminar was attended by: the Head of the Department of Biblical Studies, Archpriest Giorgi Gugushvili, members of the Department of Biblical Studies and students.
The speaker answered their questions.
