As part of the cycle of traditional public lectures at Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary, on October 14, Dr. Nana Burchuladze gave a talk the topic of which was “Georgian Icons”. “The icons of the Middle Ages have a special place in the treasury of the ecclesiastical and cultural heritage of the Georgian nation. They are chronologically, technologically, typologically, iconographically and stylistically very diverse. One part of this collection is still kept in churches, another one has been transferred to museums, and still another is preserved in the repositories abroad,” said the lecturer.
The following issues were discussed within the framework of the talk: A brief history of the Georgian icons of the Middle Ages; The typology of icons and its connection with the other fields of ecclesiastical art; Particularly famous examples of painted icons and those made of precious metals whose chronology spans the 6th–18th centuries; Historical and cultural aspects of icons and the environment in which they were created. In addition, Dr. Nana Burchuladze spoke about the correlation between Georgian and Byzantine iconography, about the masters whose hands created these indispensable sacred things for the Church.
Diverse visual material was presented during the lecture in abundance.
The talk aroused great approval and interest of the listeners. Questions were put to the speaker and significant opinions were expressed. The lecture was attended by the TTAS professors and students.
