A Meeting with the Representatives of the State Language Department
On April 4, the rectorate of Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary held a meeting with the Chairman of the State Language Department, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Faculty of Philology of Saint Andrew the First-Called Georgian University, Professor Giorgi Alibegashvili and the senior specialist of the Scientific-Educational Service of the State Language Department, the doctoral student of Arabic philology of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University, the orientalist Lado Ziraqashvili.
Mr. Giorgi Alibegashvili spoke about the activities of the State Language Department and the challenges it faces. He noted that the Department protects the constitutional status of the language of the state within the framework of the norms established by the Legislative Acts of Georgia, takes care of its popularization, determination and establishment of the norms of the Georgian literary language. Its function is to develop a unified program and policy for the protection and development of the language of the state, to plan various events in order to improve it and present the linguistic diversity of Georgia. The speaker spoke about the dangers the Abkhazian language is facing and the security of the languages of the minor groups of people living in Georgia.
It was noted that the activity of the State Language Department is a living process, therefore, the Language Department, within the framework of the action plan, constantly conducts meetings, lectures, and trainings for editors and proofreaders employed in public service, it informs the public about the new and updated norms of the Georgian literary language. At the same time, the State Language Department is actively working on issues of digitization of Georgian printed material.
Mr. Lado Zirakashvili gave a report on the updated norms of the Georgian language and presented to the audience the plan developed by the State Language Department on the unified program (strategy) of the language of the state for 2021-2030. He drew their attention to the norms of the literary language, the functioning and popularization of the Georgian and the Abkhazian languages, and the improvement of Georgian terminology.
The meeting was attended by the Rector of Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary, Protopresbyter Giorgi Zviadadze, the professors and students of the institution. Father Giorgi thanked the guests for their interesting speeches and gave them souvenirs. The meeting was interesting. The guests comprehensively answered the questions asked by the listeners.
