About the Monastic Life of Ephraim of Arizona

With the blessing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, on February 21, Archimandrite Marcellus Demetrius Karageorgis, Dean of Saint George Cathedral in Lod (Israel), gave a public lecture at the Theological Academy and Seminary. The Archimandrite told the students and professors about the monastic life of Ephraim of Arizona, a monk of Greek origin.
Monk Ephraim, having been a disciple of Joseph the Hesychast while on Mount Athos, came to America in the 70s of last century. His contribution to the catechization of the Greek diaspora and their return to the bosom of the Church is great. Beginning from the 90s, he was involved in reconstruction, eventually establishing 20 monasteries in America and Canada (similar to Mount Athos).
Archimandrite Marcellus Demetrius spoke to the audience about the Typicon used at the abode of Arizona, about the grace and difficulties of the monastic life in general, about the ways of acquiring virtues. From 1997, he himself was the disciple of Monk Ephraim in Saint Anthony’s monastery, and prior to it, he had received education at the universities in Greece and America.
A dialogue between the speaker and the audience took a larger part of the meeting. At the end of it, the Vice-Rectors of the school, Archpriest Besarion Tsintsadze and Deacon Tsotne Chkheidze thanked the guest for his highly interesting talk.
